Shanghai finds 6,000 new Covid-19 infections as financial hub's caseload grows

The daily tally continued an upwards trend in which 2,678 cases were announced on Sunday, 3,500 on Monday and 4,477 on Tuesday – although there had been only a few dozen symptomatic cases before Wednesday’s count of 326.

From Monday, areas to the east of the Huangpu River – including the Pudong New Area where about 5.7 million people live – were placed under lockdown measures for four days.

Residents were confined to their neighbourhoods, with all public transport and private vehicles barred from travelling between Pudong and Puxi. The second stage will start on Friday, with Puxi, which lies to the west of the Huangpu, to be locked down for four days.

The authorities also said they would carry out a month-long disinfection of all public areas in the city.

The central government has instructed local officials to be precise in their pandemic response measures, to minimise economic disruption, but has also demanded that local authorities halt all Covid-19 transmission, and has sacked dozens of officials for failing to contain outbreaks.

Across the country, there were 8,655 new local cases, of which 1,565 were symptomatic, and 170 imported cases, including 64 that were symptomatic.

In the northeast, Jilin province reported 2,137 local cases, of which 1,105 were symptomatic. Two of its cities have been under lockdown for the past fortnight.

The authorities in Changchun apologised on Tuesday for vegetables being in short supply in the city, because of the shutdown of its wholesale market.
